Cecilio E. Smalling Memorial

So Cal Independent Fastpitch League returned from the Las Vegas Road Trip X  to host the first Cecilio E. Smalling Memorial Tournament on April 22 – 23, 2017 at Little Park in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Twelve teams took part in the event.

After Saturday’s round-robin play, Wah and A1 Rockies emerged as the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively. Both teams went undefeated into the championship game.

Led by the pitching of Rob Schweyer, Wah defeats A1 Rockies 5 to 0 to claim its first Alliance Tournament of the season.

Wahs’ Mel Shaw opens the game with a single to right field, and then steels second to put Wah in scoring position. The next two batters are retired by A1 Rockies’ Cory Wertz. Jayro Carrizosa comes up to bat and hits a single scoring Mel from second.

In the forth inning, Jayro would get on base on an error from A1 Rockies short stop. He would later advance to second when Rob is thrown out at first. Rudy Toro smashes the ball for a double scoring Jayro. Sal Rated hits a single scoring Rudy from second giving Wah a lead 3 to 0.

In the sixth inning, Anthony Loza hits a single then Jayro crushes the ball for a homerun. Cory Wertz retires the next two batters to give A1 Rockies an opportunity to come back. But Rob Schweyer would retire the next three batters to end the game.

Pitching

Rob Schweyer brings his A game allowing only four batters to hit his pitching.

A1 Rockies’ Chris Nassour would start off the game grounding out to third. Schweyer would strike out the next five batters before the next batter to hit his ball would ground out back to the pitcher. He would then strike out the next seven batters before the next batter to hit his ball would fly out to second base, then the next batter would ground out to first, and finally he would strike out the final batter of the game. He finishes the game with fourteen strike outs and no runs allowed.

Saturday’s Round-Robin Results

Wah took the No. 1 seed going undefeated, followed by A1 Rockies who also went undefeated, Beaumont Coyotes, Those Guys, So Cal Bandits, Morongo, Maccabi USA, So Cal Heat, Young Guns, Streamline Cable, Budmen, and Soberana.

On Sunday, Wah began its run into the championship game by defeating Young Guns and Those Guys. While A1 Rockies began its run into the championship game by a Maccabi USA forfeit and defeating Beaumont Coyotes.
