There were several teams that participated in the SCIFL throughout the year and only two teams are heading to the 2016 NAFA Men’s Fastpitch World Series, division “A” which will be held August 18th through the 21st in Mankato, Minnesota.
Before the two teams head to the 2016 NAFA Men’s Fastpitch World Series they would face each other in the championship game on the last SCIFL tournament of the year, giving them a good look on how they will do at the World Series.
The Coyotes were impressive, sweeping through Saturday’s round robin (3-0) and earning the No. 1 seed into Sunday’s championship playoff. At the end of Saturday, the Coyotes allowed 3 runs while scoring 29 of their own. They started off Sunday defeating the So Cal Bandits in the semifinal game, setting up a title match with the Taft Buzzards.
The Buzzards would finish Saturday’s round robin as the No. 3 seed and would open Sunday’s playoffs by defeating Maccabi USA and Jason Gluckman 3 - 1, setting up a semifinal game with Those Guys. In the semifinal game the Buzzards would battle through 5 innings before finally settling for a 7-all tie sending the game into international tie breaker. The Buzzards would take the lead in the top of the sixth inning on a Javier Fierro single driving in Mark Vail from second. Those Guys would have the last opportunity, but they were not able to score against Danny Zupp.
In the title game the Coyotes would start Cory Wertz while the Buzzards would start Ron Mizener in the pitcher’s circle. The Buzzards would start off the game scoring 3 runs with a double by Jason Pruitt and a triple by Eddie Martin. The Coyotes would answer back with 2 runs of their own. The Buzzards would then score 1 run in the second, 2 in the third, 1 in the fourth, and 1 more in the sixth to give them 8 runs in total. The Coyotes would score their final 4 runs in the third with singles by Richard Soriano, Jeremy Dean, Jesse Mullen, and a double by David Valdivia. The Buzzards would bring in Danny Zupp in fourth inning and he would stop the Coyotes from scoring again. The game would finish with the Buzzards defeating the Coyotes 8 – 6 to claim their second championship of the year.
SCIFL would like to wish the Beaumont Coyotes and the Taft Buzzards the best of luck at the 2016 NAFA Men’s Fastpitch World Series.
