Santa Fe Springs VI
On July 11th and 12th of 2015 the SCIFL held its tournament at Los Nietos Park in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Temperatures were in the low 80’s on both days making it a great day at the park. There were eight (8) teams scheduled to play but unfortunate circumstances prevented a team from participating.
On Saturday, after the Round Robin was complete A1 Rockies took the number one seed being the only team to win its three (3) games followed by Maccabi, Hitmen, Young Guns, Buzzards, Bandits, and Balboa.
In the Championship game on Sunday Hitmen would face A1 Rockies for the third time this year. The Hitmen would started the day against the So Cal Bandits and would win 9 to 2 advancing them to the semi-final game were they would face Maccabi USA. Aaron Breslow, from Maccabi USA, would start off the game with home run against Rob Schweyer, from the Hitmen, on a count of three balls one strike. Rob would then retire the next three batters. Sal Rated would start off the game for the Hitmen with a single off Jason Gluckman, from Maccabi USA, and would later score on a base hit from Jayro Carrizosa to tie the game. Maccabi would then score an additional run in the second inning. Hitmen would then answer with two runs in the second inning which would be the final runs for both teams ending the game 3 to 2 Hitmen over Maccabi USA.
A1 Rockies would start the day against the Buzzards from Taft, CA. Jesse Duncan would be the starting pitcher for the A1 Rockies and would face Dan Zupp. A1 Rockies would be the first to score in the second inning when Joe Janike hit a triple to lead off the inning. Dave Demaio would follow with a single scoring Janike and later scoring on a double by Chris Nassour. The Buzzards would then score two runs in the fourth inning when Luke Shelby and Tyler McGaugh both singled and later scored. A1 Rockies would score an additional run in the fourth inning on a Joe Janike lead-off triple – the second one of the game – and would later score. In the fifth inning A1 Rockies would score four additional runs. At their last at bats the Buzzards scored two more runs in the sixth inning when Tyler McGaugh hit a solo home run followed by Ron Mizener hit by pitch and would later score on a double by Eddie Martin. Unfortunately, that would not be enough and the game would end 7 to 4 with A1 Rockies over the Buzzards.
In the Championship game the Hitmen would have Rob Schweyer in the pitcher’s circle and A1 Rockies would start Debbie Day and Jesse Duncan would come in to relief. The Hitmen would open the game by scoring in the first inning. In the second inning they would score five additional runs on base hits from Scooter Harris, Boy Estanulao, Cuckooman Taylor, Henry Schelb, and a home run from Sal Rated. In the third inning Jesse Duncan would come in to pitch and would not allow the Hitmen to score any additional runs. A1 Rockies would score two runs, one in the fourth inning and the other in the fifth inning. Joe Janike would hit a triple in the fourth inning and would later score. Charles Andaray would also hit a triple but in the fifth inning and would later score. That would not be enough for the A1 Rockies and the game would end 6 to 2 with Hitmen over A1 Rockies. The Hitmen would be crowned Champions for the fourth time this year.
SCIFL will head back to Little Lake Park on July 25th and 26th for its last Alliance Tournament of the year. All the teams that participated in this tournament will also be participating in the last tournament of the year and will be joined by the Coyotes and Brew Crew.
