A’s PERFECT IN SIX

The A’s were impressive, sweeping through Saturday’s round robin (3-0) and earning the No. 1 seed into Sunday’s championship playoff. At the end of Saturday, the A’s allowed 4 runs while scoring 24 of their own. They kept right on rolling Sunday, posting another 3-0 mark, culminating with an 8-1 victory over the Taft Buzzards in the title game.

The A’s opened Sunday’s playoffs by defeating Those Guys, setting up a semifinal with the A1 Rockies and open-caliber pitcher Rob Schweyer.

The right-hander threw a gem scattering five hits with 15 strikeouts. But the A’s plated a run in the third when Jenner Christiansen walked and later scored. And in the fourth, Castillo doubled and Garrity singled, with both eventually scoring to lead the A’s to a 3-0 victory.

Jones fired a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts and a walk. Chris Paiva’s single in the second and Hank Schelb’s triple to lead off the seventh the only damage. But Jones froze Schelb at third with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to end the game.

In the title game, the A’s pounded out nine hits and broke the game open with six runs in the fourth inning. Leadoff batter Marcus Tan led the way going 2 of 3 and scoring twice. In the fourth, Long Beach native and USA national team player, Kevin Castillo, blasted a home run and Jones tripled to cap the A’s offensive fireworks.

Canadian pitcher Gregg Garrity picked up the win on a three-hitter, with seven strikeouts and a walk. Priett, Martin and Vaca were the lone Buzzards to reach base safely, with Vaca scoring in the third after he had doubled.

After finishing 2-1 in the round robin, the Buzzards reached the title game by defeating the Bandits, and Maccabi USA. The Taft Buzzards finished runner-up in the SCIFL Alliance Tournament
