Las Vegas Road TripThe second edition of the Las vegas Road Trip is complete with three champions crowned. Weather for the weekend was fantastic with a plenty of good ball played by all teams. We hope that all that came had a safe journey home and that they had a chance to enjoy the nightlife in Las Vegas and had a good time both there and at the ball park. AA-Major/AA Division Sta. Cecilla of California went undefeated and beat New Image of Wisconsin 6-2 in the championship game. It was a tight game but the Sta. Cecilla bats got hot in the late innings to score four and Panfilo Veldez was able to hold off the New Image bats for the win. Sta .Cecilla opened the tournament with a win over the Las Cruces Titans of New Mexico 12-2 and then followed up with the Silverhawks of California with a 7-1 score. In the winners bracket final they faced last year's finalist Innovative Communications of Utah and escaped with a close extra inning 9-8 victory. New Image opened the tournament with a 6-4 win over the Panteras of California 6-4 but then dropped their next game against Innovative, 9-8. They took the long run facing the Panteras again in the lower bracket and winning 8-1 which then set them up against Rude-Pac of California. In a very low scoring game New Image came out ahead 1-0 to face Innovative again in the lower bracket final. In another low scoring game New Image had their second shutout in a row with a 2-0 win. A-Major Division After dropping their first two games of the tournament the Long Beach Black Sox of California went on a 6-0 run to "double-dip" Macabbi USA and to add their SCIFL championships. The Black Sox lost a close one to open the tournament against the Savala Painters of California 5-4. Their next game against Fat City of California dropped them to 0-2 as they lost the game 10-1. Their third game of the day was a forfeit win over the Manor Dirt Bags of Texas. On Sunday morning the long trek began at 8AM with Ronnie Rupp being the long man pitching in 4 pf their 5 games. They faced the Painters again and started the day with a shutout victory, 6-0. Their next opponent was Atascadados of Mexico and the Black Sox's bats once again delivered scoring 8 while Ronnie only allow two runs. In the lower bracket final the Black Sox faced San Diego Primetime of California and held on to win 5-4. This placed them in the championship game against undefeated Macabbi USA where the Black Sox came out on top with a score of 6-4. In the "IF" game Randy Clay took the start and limited Macabbi to 3 runs. Rupp came in to pitch in the last inning and to add to the drama with the Black Sox holding onto a 1 run lead and the tying run on second, with two outs the Macabbi batter just hit one foul down the line that would have tied the game. However, Rupp came back on the next pitch to get the out and take the championship. Macabbi USA which has players from various parts of the USA made it to the championship game with a 3-0 record. In their first game of the tournament they faced Fat City and won 3-2. Their second game against the Painters was a little slugfest with Macabbi USA coming out ahead 9-7 to face San Diego Primetime in the winners bracket final where they held off Primetime with a 6-1 win. A Division Flor de Cana also went undefeated posting a 5-0 record for the tournament behind the pitching of Cecillo Smalling, Darrin McCall and Doug Rooney. Flor de Cana opened the tournament with an 8-0 win over the Arizona Fastpitch Club. Their next game was against Raymar of California and Flor de Cana edged out a 2-1 victory and a game against their rivals Caribbean of California. In an action packed game that was decided on a walk off home run by Mario Ramirez, Flor de Cana won 8-6 to send them to the winners brackets final against Palm Springs Express. In another tough game, Flor de Cana came out ahead to go to the championship game where they would once again face the Caribbean's. Flor de Cana opened up scoring 14 runs behind the pitching of Rooney with Smalling coming in the last inning to seal a 14-5 victory. Next years Las Vegas Road Trip will have to be held on a new date as the Easter holiday falls on first weekend of April in 2010. SCIFL hopes to have the date that we can be confirmed for the parks in early december and will notify the teams through the normal methods. With the tournament "selling out" in mid-February this year, please do not wait until the March to reserve a spot or hotel rooms if you use the tournament block. We hope to secure additional fields next year but unfortunately Clark County cannot guarantee the amount of fields we will be able to use until they have all applications for reservations.
The response for this tournament has been fantastic and at this time the tournament is full. Teams that are not listed as confirmed have checks in the mail to confirm their spots. I'm currently seeking more fields to allow additional teams into the tournament. I have a waiting list for each division and will add teams in pairs into the divisions IF I'm able to secure the additional fields. If you would like to be placed on the waiting list please contact me so that we can make arrangements. If you plan on using Arizona Charlie's Boulder, please reserve your room now as with the amount of teams in the tournament, the rooms will sell out. Please use the number listed below and the code "SOCAL" for the tournament block of rooms. Team interested in being placed on the waiting list should contact Robert Hernandez at rmh323 ( at ) roadrunner.com or 714-392-1387. If you're still planning your season, NAFA and SCIFL have announced the second edition of the "Las Vegas Road Trip" Men's fast pitch tournament. The dates of this tournament will be April 4th and 5th. Temperatures in Sin City that time of year should be great, last year's tournament playing days were in the low 80's. This will be a NAFA sanctioned event with the participating teams separated in the following divisions: UPDATED RATES
