2013 Santa Fe Springs I Tournament

PALA BRAVES WIN THE TOURNAMENT!!!

It was another gorgeous weekend for the first SCIFL tournament of the 2013 season. Saturday gave us a cloudless sky and temperatures in the low 80s. Eight teams came out to knock some rust off, with the match-ups providing a variety of close and quick games. When all was said and done on Saturday, Maccabi USA came away with the #1 seed as the only undefeated team on Saturday.

Sunday was a different story, with temperatures slightly cooler in the low 70s. Like Sunday’s temperature drop wasn’t expected based on the day before, the teams in the Championship game could not be predicted as both teams had 1-2 records on Saturday.

The Pala Braves came into Sunday as the #7 seed. After scoring less than 2 runs per game on Saturday and giving up double digits twice, they showed up with both their offense and defense on Sunday, first taking out the #2 seed San Diego Primetime, then beating the newly formed Long Beach Wolfpack in the semi-final game.

J&B Painting was the #5 seed going into Sunday, with a couple of excruciating 1-run losses. They came out swinging on Sunday, outscoring the Colton Dirt Bags, then squeaking out a 3-2 win over the #1 seeded Maccabi.

The Championship game was a defensive and pitching duel, with no scoring for the first three innings, and a 2-2 tie after five. The Pala Braves managed back-to-back singles with 2 outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. An intentional walk of the hard hitting Sonny Perkins loaded the bases, as J&B Painting opted to go after the next batter for the third out of the inning. Tyson Magginni came through in the clutch with a double, with three runs crossing the plate that inning. J&B Painting brought some offense of their own in the top of the seventh. Brian Purcell hit a solo homerun bomb, and with 2 outs they also came through with back-to-back singles. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, it was anybody’s game. This weekend it was the Pala Braves that came out on top, with Sonny Perkins getting the dropped 3rd-strike out for the final out of 5-3 game.
