2012 Santa Fe Springs IV TournamentLIBERTY TAKES THE CHAMPIONSHIP! The SCIFL's sixth tournament of the year was once again held at Little Lake Park in Santa Fe Springs, CA in great Southern California weather. The morning haze burned off before the first pitch and temputures were in the high 70's low 80's both days. Liberty FP had most of their team this weekend with a pitching crew of Matt Barnes, Brandon Sharer and Ed Gasper. Liberty finished the round robin with 3-0 record, only allowing 3 runs to J&B Painting. They shutout the Cali Reds and San Diego Primetime. The big bats helped Liberty to secure the number one seed as Balboa also finished with a 3-0 record and 3 runs allowed. Liberty scored 24 runs to Balboa's 16. Liberty open the single elimination against Palm Springs Express with Gasper going against Graham Balog. Palm Springs jumped to an early 2 run lead in the first on a Jessie Mullen homerun, but that would be the scoring for the Express. Liberty came back in the second inning and scored 7 runs and then cruised to the victory. In their second game they faced Black Curtain with Sharer going against Meredith Cervenka and came out with a 4-1 victory to enter the championship game against the Colton Dirtbags. Barnes took the ball for Liberty against Jessie Martinez. Liberty took a 3 run lead in the second inning on 5 hits which included doubles by Dave Damaio, Ken Herbster and Dave Hess. Liberty added another run in the fifth inning for a 4-0 lead. The Dirtbags got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 4-1. In the bottom of the seventh the Dirtbags scored another run to cut the lead to 4-2 but Barnes shut them down for the complete game win and secure Liberty's second win of the season. Colton also went 3-0 in the round robin to take the 3rd seed of the single elimination. In their first game they drew J&B Painting as their opponent with Tommy Obergon in the circle against Gerald Pyle. Both pitchers were stingy with the runs but Colton was able to get a run Obergon threw a 3-hitter to shutout J&B. Next up for Colton was Balboa with Tommy taking the ball again against "Papa Joe" Salcido. Colton came out on top in the game with a 6-2 victory to advance to the championship game. Next up, July 7-8 in Santa Fe Springs.
