2010 Santa Fe Springs IV

SAME PLACE, SAME TEAMS IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, DIFFERENT OUTCOME

Liberty FP entered Sunday's single-elimination as the number 5 seed with a 2-1 record in the round robin with their only lost against Maccabi USA.  In their first game of the day on Sunday they faced the number 4 seed Long Beach Black Sox.  Ed Patterson was in the circle for Liberty and recorded a shutout against the tough hitting Black Sox.  Liberty scored 6 including a home run by Joe Janicke.

In the semi-finals they faced the surprising J&B Painting team from Burbank and with Doug Rooney in the circle they blanked J&B 7-0.  In the game Dave Damio homered and team captain David Carrilllo hit a double and triple.

This led them to a rematch of last tournaments championship game against the Panteras.  Darrin McCall was in the circle against Gerald Pyle of the Panteras.  Liberty jumped to an early 2-0 lead as Dave Hess lead the game off with a double and would eventually score the games first run.  The Panteras didn't roll over as they scored four runs in their half of the inning as they put together 5 hits including a double by Jimmy Buentello Jr to take the lead.

Anthony Rocha homered in the second inning to increase the lead to 5-2.  Liberty tied the game in the third scoring three runs in their half of the inning including a double by Janicke who also scored.  Liberty added two more runs in the fourth as Travis Price came in relief of Pyle in the inning.

Robert Renteria scored a run for the Panteras in the bottom of the fifth as he opened the inning up with a double and would later score on a Mario Hernandez single to cut the lead to one, 7-6.

In the top of the sixth, Jeremy Rooney open the inning with a single and scored on a Carrillo triple, who later scored in the inning to take a 3 run lead.  But the Panteras came back with two of their own in the bottom of inning as Rocha was the spark plug once again getting on base.  Rocha and Eli Salazer would score to cut the lead again to one run.  Ed Patterson had entered the game in the inning for Liberty FP.

The Panteras were not going to give the game to Liberty as Hernandez singled to open the inning and later advanced to second.  However, Patterson got the next three batters out to preserve the win for McCall.  This is Liberty FP's second championship of the season.

The Panteras came into the single elimination also with a 2-1 record and were the number 3 seed.  They faced the Black Curtain.  Mario Hernandez started the game and the Panteras got some work for all three pitchers as Price and Pyle also had a part in the 9-2 victory.  In the semi-finals the Panteras faced Maccabi USA with Price going against Russ Snow.  The Panteras came out on top in this one 2-1 with Price pitching the complete game and allowing only one hit and striking out 14 to enter the championship game.

Overall their was some good ball this weekend with J&B Painting being the cinderella story of the weekend taking the number one seed in the single elimination.  Next tournament, which is also the last for the SCIFL, is July 24th and 25th in where else, Little Lake Park in Santa Fe Springs.

Panteras chose not to take a photo.
