2010 Santa Fe Springs II

The Colton Dirt Bags take the title

The Colton Dirt Bags came out on top this weekend in Santa Fe Springs as they were crowned champions following their 14-2 victory over Mi Tierra.

The Dirt Bags came into the single elimination with a 2-1 record in the round robin and only allowing 8 runs.  Bret Pobrantz shared the pitching duties on Sunday with Anthony Martinez.  Brett picked up the first win of the day 5-3 over Black Curtain.

In their second game of the day, the Dirt Bags faced the number one seed Long Beach Black Sox, the only team that beat them on Saturday.  In this game Anthony faced Ryan Webb of the Black Sox in a great pitcher's duel that went scoreless through the first seven frames.  In the first international tie breaker both teams scored a run but both were held scoreless in the 9th inning.  In the top of the 10th the Dirt Bags Moses Rodriguez scored what would be the winning run as Anthony left the tying run at third as he retired the side in order for the win. In the game, Anthony had 9 strikeouts and Ryan had 15. A very tough played game.

This sent the Colton Dirt Bags to their second championship game of the season against Mi Tierra.  Brett once again had the ball against Tommy Obergon who was pitching his fourth game of the day.  The Dirt Bags jumped to an early 5-0 lead.  In the third inning the Dirt Bags scored another five runs, including a lead off home run by Anthony Martinez.  Mi Tierra scored a run in both the third and fourth innings.  The Dirt Bags scored another four runs in the top of the fifth off Johnny Rodriguez who entered the game earlier in relief of Tommy.  The final score was 14-2 with the Colton Dirt Bags winning their first ever SCIFL championship.

Mi Tierra entered single elimination as the number six seed.  In each of their first three games of the day they had some cliff hangers as they won each by one run.  Their first game of the day was against the Palm Springs Express with a win of 7-6.

This put them against the number three seed team, San Diego Primetime.  In this game they came out on top 4-3 which sent them to the semi-finals against Liberty FP. In the final inning with two outs and the game tied, Mi Tierra loaded the bases and then scored the winning run on a hit batsmen to send them to their first championship game in the SCIFL.  As mentioned earlier, Tommy Obergon pitched in all four games on Sunday with Johnny "Pee Wee" Rodriguez coming in relief.  I don't think we've seen the last of Mi Tierra in championships games as they are a tough squad.

All in all it was another great weekend for the SCIFL.  The weather was nice, a bit on the chilly side for So Cal and a strong wind on Sunday but we still had some great games all weekend.
