A1-ROCKIES TAKE THE FINAL ALLIANCE TOURNAMENT OF THE YEAR OVER NATTY BONGO

SCIFL held its final Alliance Tournament of the year on July 25th and 26th at Little Lake Park in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Temperatures were in the high 80’s both days making it a great day at the park. There were ten (10) teams scheduled to play but unfortunate circumstances prevented a team from participating.  

 

On Saturday, after the Round Robin was complete Natty Bongos, the new comers of the tournament, took the number one seed followed by A1 Rockies, Buzzards, Young Guns, Coyotes, Balboa, Brew Crew, Bandits, and Maccabi.

 

Two teams, Natty Bongos and A1 Rockies, headed into the Championship game on Sunday undefeated. Natty Bongos would started the day against Maccabi and would win a very close game 2 to 0 advancing them to the semi-final were they would face the Coyotes. In the semi-final game Gilbert Joiner was in the pitcher’s circle for Natty Bongos and would face Kurt Walker of the Coyotes. The Coyotes would start off the game by scoring three (3) runs but Natty Bongos would answer back with two (2) runs to end the first inning. In the second inning Coyotes would score an additional run and Natty Bongos would answer back with four (4) runs to take the lead 6 to 4. The Coyotes were not able to score any more runs while Natty Bongos was able to score one (1) more run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The game would finish 7 to 4 with Natty Bongos over the Coyotes and they would advance to the Championship game to face A1 Rockies.

 

A1 Rockies would start the day against Brew Crew and would win 12 to 3 advancing them to the semi-final were they would face the Buzzards for the second time in two tournaments. In the semi-final game Jesse Duncan was in the pitcher’s circle for A1 Rockies and would face Dan Zupp and Mark Bennett would relief in the sixth inning. The Buzzards would start off the game with three up three down and A1 Rockies would score one (1) run in the first inning. In the second inning the Buzzards would score two (2) runs to take the lead and A1 Rockies would go scoreless. In the third inning the Buzzards would go scoreless and A1 Rockies would score three (3) runs. In the fourth inning both teams went scoreless. In the fifth inning the Buzzards would score one (1) run and A1 Rockies would go scoreless. In the sixth inning the Buzzards would score two (2) runs and take the lead 5 to 4. But, A1 Rockies would answer back with a three (3) run homerun by Dave Carrillo. Later in the same inning time would expire and the game would finish 7 to 5 A1 Rockies over the Buzzards and they would advance to the Championship game to face the number one seed Natty Bongos.

 

In the Championship game Lamar Gross was in pitcher’s circle for Natty Bongos and would face Jesse Duncan. A1 Rockies would start off the game with a solo home run by Jason Obregon but Natty Bongos would answer right back with four (4) runs to end the first inning. In the second inning A1 Rockies would score four (4) runs to take back the lead while Natty Bongos would go scoreless. In the third inning A1 Rockies would go scoreless and Natty Bongo would score one (1) run to tie the game 5 to 5. A1 Rockies would score one (1) run in the fourth, one (1) run in the seventh, and would not allow Natty Bongo to score any more runs to end the game 7 to 5. A1 Rockies would be crowned Champions for the first time this year.

 

SCIFL would like to thank all the teams who participated in this year’s tournaments and would like to wish all the SCIFL teams heading to the NAFA World Series, in all divisions, the best of luck. We look forward to seeing all the teams back next year.
