Organization

The Southern California Independent Fastpitch League (SCIFL) was formed in 2007 by Fernie Ramirez, Fred Hanker and Robert Hernandez. It is a men’s fast pitch softball league which travels all over Southern California and out of state.  The league consists of 8 – 16 teams based in Southern California and is closely affiliated with NAFA, abiding by all its rules and guidelines. NAFA assists in setting up the insurance and supplying the balls for the league weekends. The SCIFL is a non-profit organization which has a governing body consisting of 7 members which make up the board of directors. Fred Hanker was elected commissioner and Robert Hernandez tournament director. The league has also formed a 3-man player classification committee led by Robert Hernandez to rate players. The association has formed a constitution which was drafted by Fred Hanker and Robert Hernandez and the league shall abide by the constitution to govern its play.

The SCIFL is currently the only men’s fast pitch softball league in Southern California. The games are played on various weekends using a 3-game round robin format on Saturday, and a single elimination format on Sunday. A point system is in place to track the league standings. The SCIFL is divided into 2 divisions; The A-Major Division and the “A” Division. In 2007 the Long Beach Black Sox won the A-Major Division with Flor de Cana winning the “A” Division. Rude Pac finished second in the A-Major Division but went on to win the NAFA World Series in Des Moines, Iowa. The league also has a website to help inform and promote the SCIFL. The organization is in its second full season, after a successful inaugural term in 2007. In August, the SCIFL will once again compete at the 2008 NAFA World Series in Mankato, Minnesota.

The SCIFL and its governing body also work closely with Jim Flanagan and FastpitchWest.com to update the progress of the league and promotion of fast pitch all across the country. The group is quickly gaining popularity all around the United States. It is our goal to be a significant factor in men’s fast pitch softball in Southern California for many years to come. Please feel free to contact us with any questions about the league or if you would like more information about the SCIFL.
